Springdale Township Cemetery Monument

Stereograph of monument. This 17.5 foot granite monument was erected on September 15, 1901, to mark the location of a Norwegian Lutheran cemetery in the northwest quarter of the northwest quarter of Section 8. Use of the cemetery began in 1847 and was discontinued in 1863 in favor of a new cemetery adjoining the Springdale Lutheran Church one mile to the southeast. The fifty or so burials had been marked with wooden crosses, but due to their later deterioration, a freewill subscription, begun in 1898, raised funds for a more permanent monument on which were inscribed the names of many of those buried there. |
