Reverend William Streissguth
Portrait of Reverend William Streissguth (1827-1915). Streissguth, a native of Lahr, Germany, trained at the Baseler Missionhaus and was sent by the Reformed Church of Canton Glarus, Switzerland, to serve at New Glarus and New Bilton in Green County, Wisconsin in 1850. He joined Pastor John Muehlhaeuser at Grace Lutheran Church in Milwaukee in 1856, serving there until 1868. Muehlhaeuser organized what became the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Streissguth served as the fourth president of the Wisconsin Synod. After 1868 he served at Fond du Lac, in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, and in Kenosha before returning to Milwaukee in 1886. |

Streissguth was a brother-in-law of Milwaukee publisher and businessman George Brumder, having married Brumder's sister Maria Eva. Maria died in childbirth in Milwaukee in 1857. A year later, Streissguth returned to Europe and married Maria's sister Magdalena who joined him in Milwaukee. |
