Man Posing with Horse

Man posing with a draft horse, probably a Clydesdale, in front of the Merchants Inn. There were many draft stallions, English Shire, Clydesdale, Norman Percheron, and Belgians raised south of Black River Falls for driving and breeding purposes. J.A. "Abe" Bailey and Gaylord of Melrose were two prominent horsemen. They competed in the horse and team pulling contests at the Jackson County Fair. Bailey sometimes won the team contest, but Gaylord had a 1400 pound mare which was unbeatable. |
