Henry Clay Taylor

Studio portrait of 2nd Lieutenant Henry Clay Taylor (1838-1864), 21st Wisconsin Infantry, Company A, wearing a Union soldier's uniform. Henry was a bookkeeper in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin when he enlisted on August 13, 1862 as a sergeant. He was captured at the Battle of Chickamauga (September 1863) and sent to Libby Prison. Around May of 1864 he became sick and was first sent to a prison hospital in Macon, Georgia and then to one in Charleston, South Carolina. He died there supposedly on December 12, 1864, but letters to his father (located in the Wisconsin Historical Archives) indicate he probably died the first week of October. |
