Constructed in 1893, the <i>Christopher Columbus</i> was the only passenger-carrying whaleback steamer ever built. Eighteen passengers died when the ship hit a water tower on the bank of the Milwaukee River on June 30th, 1917.
DESCRIPTION
Large crowd looking at the damaged Christopher Columbus cruise vessel at dock. Constructed in 1893, the Christopher Columbus was the only passenger-carrying whaleback steamer ever built. Eighteen passengers died when the ship hit a water tower on the bank of the Milwaukee River on June 30th, 1917.
