Drawing by Ed Hinrichs of the Madison Capital Times. The recall effort was launched by Sauk City newspaperman Leroy Gore. Although McCarthy spoke disparagingly of the campaign, which coincided with the beginning of the Army-McCarthy hearings, McCarthy repeatedly returned to Wisconsin during May and June, 1954 in an attempt to mend political fences. |
