Alexander Dallas Bache, Scientist

Vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867). Worked as Professor of Natural Philosophy and Chemistry at University of Pennsylvania and Superintendant of the U.S. Coast Survey, from 1843-1861. Also served as President of the National Academy of Sciences from its founding in 1863 until his death. Bache was also a greatgrandson of Benjamin Franklin. Handwritten inscription at bottom of card reads, "A.D. Bache, U.S. Coast Survey, 1869." |
