In 1871, Woodworth became the first Surgeon General of the United States. He was one of the organizers of the Chicago Academy of Science and in 1858 became curator of its museum. Woodworth served under General William Tecumseh Sherman as a surgeon in the Civil War, and lead the ambulance train during "Sherman's March," without losing a single man. Photographer's credit on back reads, "Whitehurst Gallery, 434 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C." Handwritten inscription on back reads, "Dr. John M. Woodworth in Russian American costume worn while on the expedition." From album of portrait photographs collected by Lapham depicting scientists and artists, ca. 1860-ca. 1875. Images include portraits of geologists, botanists, sculptors, and authors. One of two portraits of Woodworth in album (see Image ID :47689). Album includes a note, which reads, "Dr. John S. Woodworth and Robert Kennicott of Chicago went to Russian Dunerica [?] for the Government. Collections made by them were burned in Academy of Science building in Chicago fire of 1871.
