Theodatus Garlick, Sculptor and Plastic Surgeon
Reproduction of a carte-de-visite portrait of Theodatus Garlick (1805-1884), American surgeon and sculptor. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, Garlick was one of the world's first plastic surgeons. Along with colleague H.A. Ackley, he was known for successfully artificially propagating trout and other fish. He was also a talented fine art sculptor. It has been suggested that Garlick made the first daguerreotype photograph taken in the United States, and later the first daguerreotype taken in the shade. Caption above the image reads, "b. Middlebury, Vt. Mch, 30 1805. This likeness - June, 1872." |
