Eisenhower Press Conference

At his first press conference as an announced candidate for the Presidency, Dwight D. Eisenhower meets the press in a theatre. He took questions from over 300 journalists for forty-five minutes about Korea, civil rights, labor, and other topics. He said his goal was world peace and removing the "umbrella of fear," which he said was "un-American" and "completely stultifying." However, in reply to a direct question about whether he intended to endorse the re-election of Joseph R. McCarthy, Eisenhower answered that he did not intend to engage in personalities. |
