Joseph R. McCarthy Funeral

Marine honor guard at the funeral of Senator Joseph R. McCarthy. Jean McCarthy (wearing a round black hat), stands to the left of the Marines. McCarthy's death created a virtual frenzy among Wisconsin political leaders — both Republicans and Democrats — for election to the senator's unexpired seat. Ultimately Democrat William Proxmire won in a surprise victory that attracted national attention. |
