Original, inscribed political cartoon by Clifford K. Berryman, showing Robert M. La Follette, Jr., carrying the Wisconsin Progressive Party back to the Republican Party in which it had been an insurgent wing under La Follette's father, Robert M. La Follette, Sr., and a separate party since 1934. The Progressives political fortunes had been waning and, although La Follette had been courted by the Democrats, at his urging the party voted to return to the Republican fold. Ultimately this meant that La Follette had to run for re-election in 1946 against Joseph R. McCarthy, the endorsed Republican candidate, in the primary election. McCarthy won in an upset victory and ultimately defeated his Democratic opponent. The caricature of John L. Lewis relates to the study of industrial espionage studied by the La Follette Civil Liberties Committee during the 1930s.
