Jefferson's Transfer Line

Exterior view of Jefferson's Transfer Line, owned by Beverly Jefferson. Beverly Frederick Jefferson was the grandson of President Thomas Jefferson, being the son of Eston Hemings Jefferson, who was a son of Sally Hemings. Sally Hemings was a slave on Jefferson's estate. Beverly Frederick Jefferson was born in Augusta County, Virginia in 1839, and came to Madison with his parents, Eston and Julia, in the fall of 1852 from Chillicothe, Ohio. Beverly was a hotel keeper and carriage-line operator. |
