Langdon Street Residence
The Watson-Butler-Gilman-Montgomery house, located at 115 Langdon Street. The home was built by W.H. Watson in 1858, purchased by Professor James Davie Butler of the University of Wisconsin about 1865 and then purchased by Mr. Gilman in 1895. Mr. Watson was private secretary to Governor Randall and came to Madison from Milwaukee where he had been editor of the "Milwaukee Journal Sentinel." According to a suggestion by W.A.P. Morris, Mr. Watson may have designed the house himself. The front gable lines originally ran down to the corners, but the roof design was later changed because of leakage. The house has very fine, large timbers. The center chimney rises through the middle of one of the bedrooms. The ceilings on the (ground floor?) are ten feet high. Total, there are 13 rooms, including 6 bedrooms, three living rooms, a dining room, kitchen and two storerooms. |
