From the back of the photograph: One of the first, if not the first, buildings to go up was the sauna. While a number of Finns are now building their saunas in the basements of their homes, the sauna with smoke curling upward on Wednesdays and Saturdays remains the hallmark of a Finnish farm. Aleksi Kivi in his great book, Seven Brothers, said this about the sauna: "A farm without a bath-house is no good either from the standpoint of baths or the babies a wife or the farm-hand's women might have. Ay, a smoking bath-house, a barking hound, a crowing cock, and a mewing pussy, these are the signs of a good farm." |
