Organized ca. 1915. Perhaps the most famous of Finnish immigrant boarding houses in Wisconsin. Menu in earlier years featured such Finnish delicacies as viila, vellia, mojakkaa and silkkaa, When Superior was enjoying the prosperity of World War II, the hotel's 52 rooms were occupied and 300-400 men were served meals. Now there are plenty of rooms available and only some 25 regular boarders. The Tarmo has always been "leftist" in its ideological tone. Although Duluth, rather than Superior, has been the stronghold of Industrial Unionism, the Tarmo has been the staunch supporter of these tenets. |
