Home of John Johnston, Milwaukee

Home of John Johnston (1836-1904), a successful Milwaukee banker, at 1241 N. Franklin Place (originally 645 Franklin Place); also known as "The Lion House" due to the stone lions on the front porch. House is set back from the road, with the porch partially in the shade of a large tree next to the street. The Lion House was built in 1851 for Edward Diedrichs. Shortly after his financial downfall in 1857, his friend Rudolph Pfeil purchased the home. Pfeil sold it to Henry Mann, manufacturer of chairs and wooden ware, who sold it to Johnston in 1896. Johnston added the second story. Johnston's wife Ethelinda (Thorsen) Johnston (1856-1947) lived in this house until 1936 when she sold the home and its contents to pay back taxes. |
