Knut Iversen Vike

Portrait of Knut Iversen Vike, Company F, 15th Wisconsin Infantry, in his Civil War uniform. The following information is in the published Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers: Knud Iversen enlisted as a Private on 18 Jan 1862, and was credited to Dane County. He died 31 December 1862 at the battle of Stone(s) River, Tennessee. (Vike was his Norwegian farm name; a farm name was often added to the patronymic as a surname after they had been in the U.S. for a period of time.) This portrait was labeled circa 1916 by Waldemar Ager (apparently in error) as being Knut Larson Gjermo of Company H, 15th Wisconsin Infantry. See the Additional Information note below. |

In Dec 2010, Steven W. Thompson of Eau Claire WI wrote to say that this photograph is identical to several others of his great great grandfather, Knud Iversen, that have been handed down in his family. Iversen did serve in the 15th Infantry, but was in Company F, not Company H. This suggests that Waldemar Ager mislabeled this photo, apparently switching it with WHi-25425, which he labeled as Knut Iverson, Company F. The fact that the hat in WHi-25425 clearly has a Company H patch, and that the Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers shows that Knut Larson Gjermo served in Company H, provides additional evidence that Ager switched the names on these two photos. Photos of the two men appear adjacent to each other in Ager's 1916 book, Oberst Heg og hans gutter, on page 289, which may have contributed to the mixup. So we have provided what we judge to be the correct name as the title of each of these two photographs. According to Ager's book, Knut Iverson Vike was born in Voss, Norway; was 39 years old and married when he enlisted; and fell in the battle of Stone's River on 31 December 1862. There is a Knud Iversen, Private, Co. F, 15th Wisconsin Infantry, who died 31 December 1862, buried in the Stones River National Cemetery, Murfreesboro, Tennessee. According to Steven W. Thompson, Knud Iversen was born in 1822 and married in 1846 in Hordaland, Voss, Norway; he emigrated in 1856 and settled in Keyeser, Columbia County. His daughter Brita, Thompson's great grandmother, was born there on 18 May 1862 (3 1/2 months after her father died). |
