Hollister was one of early Madison's most prominent pharmacists, first opening a pharmacy in 1876. He was interested in botanical medicaments, and traveled to the Rocky Mountains to study the medicinal properties of various herbs. It was through this research that he formulated the very popular "Rocky Mountain Tea," advertised as a "tonic necessary for the maintenance of a clean, vigorous body, as is the salt that we eat." The tea, which was a laxative, was extremely popular and profitable. It was packaged on the upper floor of Hollister's Pharmacy until a move to more spacious quarters at the 100 block of North Hamilton Street. The Stanley C. Hanks collection photograph is annotated across the bottom with the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 under each person. The verso of the photograph identifies persons 1 and 2. |
