Jones Island Dwellings

Elevated view of a cluster of old dwellings in the center, with broken shacks and rusted cars. In the background are railroad cars, and an industrial area with men working. In the distance is the shoreline of Lake Michigan. In the foreground is the shadow of a hill with a figure on top, presumably the photographer. |

Jones Island was a marsh island located between the Milwaukee and Kinnickinnic Rivers in Milwaukee, just south of the harbor entrance. Polish immigrants settled the island in the 1870s, and it eventually became a small village of approximately 1600 people as well as a center of commercial fishing. The village was eventually torn down for a sewage treatment plant. The last fishing shanty was demolished in 1961. From Ackerman, Sandra. Milwaukee Then and Now. San Diego: Thunder Bay Press, 2004, p. 98-99. |
