Text on back reads, "NORMANDY, an ancient north-west province of the Republic of France and now divided into and embracing the departments of Seine-Inferieure, Eure, Calvados, Manche and Orne, extends along the English Channel, east by Picardy and Isle de France (from which it was partly divided by the Bresle, the Epte and the Eure) and the south by the Perche, Maine and Brittany, the upper Sarthe and the lower Couesnon forming a part of the dividing line. It is most level and fertile, and produces grain, flax and fruit, and an excellent breed of horses. Rouen was the capital of the province and the chief town of the division of Upper Normandy, and Caen was the chief town of Lower Normandy. The early Gallic inhabitants were subdued by the Romans who included it in the province of Gallia Lugdunensis Secunda. Under the Merovingian Kings, it was included within the limits of Neustria, and received the name of Normandy from the North-men who occupied it in the beginning of the 10th century. In 912, Charles the Simple gave his sanction to the conquests made by the Northmen, and Rollo, their chief, received the title of Duke of Normandy. Our picture shows two women of Normandy employed in doing some fancy work on a "Singer" sewing machine. They are dressed in the usual costume of the Normandy peasantry, and wear the famed Normandy caps. |
