Shell Manufacture at Milwaukee Works
Factory workers producing artillery shells at International Harvester's Milwaukee Works. Original caption reads: "75-Millimeter Shell Manufacture. First operation in the production of 75-millimeter shells at the International Harvester Company's Milwaukee Works. Here steel rods are heated in a furnace and then chipped of loose particles of steel, after which the operator on the left places the bar in an upsetter machine. The bar is held in five different positions in the upsetter, after which the rough forging is completed. The forging is then lifted by the operator in the upper left of the photograph and placed on a conveyor to carry it to the next operation." |
