Donated by Brother Joseph Dutton (1843-1931) of Janesville, Wisconsin, who served as a priest at the Kalaupapa Leper Colony at Kalawao on the Hawaiian island of Molokai beginning in 1886. At the time of donation, Brother Dutton wrote, the ruler "with two feet broken off" was used by Father Damien "for some years more than three, surely? He was a pretty good carpenter in rather a rough way. Still he did some finer work in building--and partly finishing--several chapels, cottages, etc." Father Damien de Veuster (1840-1889) of Belgium came to Hawaii in March 1864 as a missionary and was ordained into the priesthood two months later. In 1873 Father Damien became the priest for the Kalaupapa Leper Colony at his request. He died April 15, 1889 of leprosy, now known as Hansen's disease. |
