Donated by Brother Joseph Dutton (1843-1931) of Janesville, Wisconsin, who served as a priest at the Kalaupapa Leper Colony at Kalawao on the Hawaiian island of Molokai beginning in 1886. Made by Kiki (or Kiko) Opio at the Baldwin Home for lepers at the Kalaupapa Leper Colony. Noted at the time of donation is that the top is koa wood and the sides made from an old Bull Durham (cigar) box. Kiki Opio arrived at Kalaupapa, the peninsula where Kalawao is located, on October 31, 1906. He was 20 years old and from Maui. |
