Madison Public Library
Interior view of the Madison Public Library. The library opened in 1905 and was funded by a $75,000 gift from Andrew Carnegie. Reverse of cardboard mounting reads: "Madison (Wis.) Free Library Children's Room taken from front end. Door at the right opens into cloak closet, alcove used as classroom for teachers; has children's reference books for grade work in schools, pedagogical books for teachers, card catalogue, dictionary stand, and picture case. The frieze across end of room is continued all around the room. It is made of the Walter Crane books, each story being complete in one frame. Fiction is shelved at the rear of the room; classed books along the side wall (not shown); and picture books and books for the very little people in the corner case in front, between the catalog case and the window seat (not shown)." |
