Mamie Till Bradley, the mother of Emmett Till, weeps during his funeral. The 14-year-old Till was murdered while visiting relatives in Mississippi for allegedly whistling at a white woman. Mrs. Bradley decided that her son's casket be open for the funeral so that his beaten body could be photographed by the press. The resulting images greatly shocked the public and played a role in instigating the modern civil rights movement. |
