Emmett Till Audience

A group of African Americans in the courtroom at the Emmett Till murder trial. The 14-year-old Till, who was visiting Mississippi from Chicago, was murdered by two white men for allegedly whistling at a white woman. The defendants were acquitted, although they later confessed to the crime. The woman in the front row who is taking notes has been identified as Lillian Pittman, who was a member of a United Packinghouse Workers of American in Mississippi. Her notes were meant to inform the coverage of journalists who were not admitted to the courtroom. |
