What is a Scab? | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Four members of United Packinghouse Workers Union Local 309 (which was part of District 9) on strike against the W.W. Pickle Company. The picket sign carried by one woman, Lucille Lewis, expresses the antipathy strikers felt toward the workers who crossed their picket lines. Her sign reads: "God made the world, man, and snakes who crawls on his belly. But who made the Scab?" The other strikers (left to right) are Janie B. Harris, Arthur Germany, and Hattie Matthews.
