Tractorette Field Demonstration
Instructor Mr. Schweitzer reviewing the operation of a Farmall M tractor with a group of women. The women are (L to R): Donna Mehaffy, Oakville; Marian Hultgren, Mediapolis; Susanne Wilson, Mediapolis; Helen Creelman, Mediapolis; Rosemary Yoder, Oakville; Cynthia Jantz, Oakville; Helen Jackson, Sperry; and Lois Wilson, Morning Sun. The women are taking part in International Harvester's "Tractorette" program. The company announced the program in 1942. It was intended to address the farm labor shortage created by U.S. war mobilization. The plan called for local dealers to offer free training for thousands of farm women and girls in the operation of tractors and other farm machinery. |
