Vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Major General John McAllister Schofield. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was commissioned as a major in the Missouri volunteer regiment. Shortly following his commander's death, at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, he was promoted to Brigadier General of volunteers until November 1862 when he was further promoted to Major General. After his promotion, he became Commander of the Army of the Frontiers and the District of St. Louis, until April 1863, when he was given command of the Department of Missouri. In the spring of 1864 until the end of the war, he was assigned command of the Department of Ohio and the Army of Ohio. In this assignment he assisted General Sherman near Chattanooga when he was advancing towards Atlanta. |
