Vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Lieutenant General Ambrose Powell Hill. At the start of the Civil War he entered into the service of the South as a colonel in the 13th Virginia Volunteers. In February 1863 he received the commission of Brigadier General and fought at the Battle of Williamsburg, and was promoted to Major General in May 1862. In 1862 his command also fought at Cold Harbor, Second Manassas, and Harper's Ferry. In 1863 he fought at Chancellorsville, after which he was promoted to command the 3rd Army Corps in the Army of Northern Virgina, which he commanded at Gettysburg. He was killed on April 2, 1865 at Petersburg while he was leading a part of his rallied force. |
