Andrew H. Foote
Engraved quarter-length carte-de-visite portrait of Commander Andrew Hull Foote in uniform with epaulettes. When the Civil War broke out, Foote was placed in command of naval operations on the western rivers (Upper Mississippi River). His flotilla of gun boats coordinated with General Grant's troops in capturing Fort Henry in early February 1862. A few days later after capturing Fort Henry, Foote and Grant also worked together in capturing Fort Donelson. During the naval bombardment of the fortifications, Foote was injured in the leg and foot. It is believed that these wounds caused his death, in part, on June 26, 1863. |
