Royal Airport, south of Lake Monona, was one of several Madison area airports associated with Howard Morey. Morey established his first company in 1926 and in exchange for a commercial fee from the Pennsylvania Oil Company named his airport Pennco Field. The next year he formed a partnership with the Royal Transit Co. to provide a bus-plane commuter service to Chicago. Pennco Field then became the Royal Airport. That experiment ended in 1928 for lack of business. Although Morey ceased operations in 1932, the field continued to be Madison's busiest air field until the construction of Madison Municipal Airport. |
