The original typewritten caption reads: "Terraced field of M.L. Jackson, route 2, Sulligent, showing erosion of soil on the flats. To the credit of Mr. Jackson it must be said that he planted winter oats as a cover crop, in the cotton field, but the seed was not good, or conditions were unfavorable and the winter oats did not grow, which left his land bare and subject to considerable washing. Too few Alabama farmers try to protect their land with cover crops and that is why they have so much waste land given over to deep gullies."
