The original typewritten caption reads: "This field - an abandoned Cotton field near Meridian, Miss. shows how many thousands of acres of good Southern land have been ruined by one crop farming. Year after year the field was planted in cotton and after the cotton was taken off, it was let lay all winter with no protecting crop, or pasture, from the heavy dashing rains of the South, during the winter season, and as a consequence, the fertility of the soil has been literally washed away."
