The original typewritten caption reads, "A very common sight in Alabama. A boy, a mule hitched to a plow and a stump to plow around. The mules do not like those stumps for the hanging up of the plow on the roots is hard on the shoulders, so the mules anticipate the event by stopping before the accident happens, sometimes making several hesitations before the plow has reached the stump. If by skillful guidance the plow goes around the stump it is not far until another one is approached and the loss in time and energy plowing such land compared to clear land is very large, but it is almost impossible to get the natives to see it that way. They never get what would be called a fair day's wage for their farming work and have ceased to consider that they are farming for a salary. With most of them it is in the hopes of making enough to cancel the credit at the store so they can start right in on next season's credit."
