| Aside from Governor Robert M. La Follette, Sr., Old Abe was the most famous personality associated with the third Capitol. Maude Keene Gill saw Old Abe in his quarters in the Capitol basement shortly before his death. "The ceiling appropriately painted blue, with white stars, and the bars which separated his commodious home from the hall alternate red and blue...He was anything but a pleasant bird, glowering at his many visitors with evident dislike." This photograph of Old Abe patriotically posed was distributed widely as part of a stereograph series by H.H. Bennett. |
