The Union Must and Shall Be Preserved

Miss Columbia is standing on the body of a fallen soldier. She has a sword in her right hand and is holding the Union flag in her left hand. The words: "THE UNION MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED" is on a banner. The artist appears to have reworked the State Seal of Virginia in order to drive home the point of "Sic Semper Tyrannus" like a blunt instrument. The Capitol building, federal (bald) eagle and federal shield are in the background. Blue and red ink on beige envelope. Illustration at top and left side, printed on envelope, mounted on a decorative border and collected in an album. |
