Beware

The American Eagle is holding a banner with the word "BEWARE" on it in his beak. He is gripping a federal shield with a Union flag draped over it with his left talons. The shield is surrounded by a cannon, a rifle, a knife and some rope. In his right talons he grips a bow and is shooting red arrows towards a bundle of 8 snakes being held by "JEFF. DAVIS." The snakes each are labeled, "ARKANSAS," "TEXAS," "S. CAROLINA," "N. CAROLINA," "GEORGIA," "ST. LOUIS," "VIRGINIA" and "BALTIMORE." "ST. LOUIS" and "BALTIMORE" are pierced with arrows and are bleeding. Below is the text, "COPYRIGHT SECURED, Salem, Mass." Red and blue ink on beige envelope, image is on left side. Image printed on envelope, mounted on various colored pages and collected in an album. |
