Jeff's Knave-y

Jefferson Davis and six sailors sail in a tea cup. A pirate flag flies overhead. One sailor is in the "crow's nest." Another is using a paddle. Three sailors hold swords and the last sailor holds a swab (for loading the cannon). Jefferson Davis dressed as a Naval officer looks through a spy glass. Caption above reads, "JEFF'S KNAVE-Y." Text below reads, "Seven wise men of Gotham went to sea in a bowl." This refers to characters in British folklore, "many English villages were mocked for alleged stupidity, but only Gotham, seven miles from Nottingham, was famous well beyond its neighborhood." Black ink on cream envelope, image on left side. |
