George Haley is an influential African American lawyer. He was born in 1925 in Henning, Tennessee. He was the second African American student to graduated from the University of Arkansas Law School. He has served in seven presidential administrations since 1969. From 1998 to 2001 he served as U. S. Ambassador to Gambia. His brother is the Pulitzer Prize winning novelist, Alex Haley.
