Manuscript
Letter from Robert E. Lee to Cyrus McCormick

Front side of a letter written and sent by Robert E. Lee from Washington College in Lexington, Virginia to Cyrus McCormick. Lee acted as president of Washington College after the Civil War, from 1865 until his death in 1870. The letter describes various efforts and programs implemented at the college and resulted in a financial gift from McCormick to the school. A statue of McCormick stands on the grounds of what is now known as Washington and Lee University, and a library on campus currently called The James G. Leyburn Library was known as the Cyrus Hall McCormick Library until about 1960. |
