Home of John Johnston

Exterior view from street of home of John Johnston (1836-1904), a successful Milwaukee banker, located at 645 Franklin Place, also known as "The Lion House." The Lion House was built in 1851 for Edward Diedrichs. Shortly after his financial downfall in 1857, his friend Rudolph Pfeil purchased the home. Pfeil sold it to Henry Mann, manufacturer of chairs and wooden ware, who sold it to Johnston in 1896. Johnston added a second story. In 1925 Mrs. Ethelinda (Thorsen) Johnston (1856-1947) added a garage to the left of the house. This image predates the garage. The Mary B. Hawley House seen on the right was built in 1896. |
