Class Portrait
Vintage photograph, dated ca. 1890, with a wraparound handwritten message from Miss Louise Parke to her beloved teacher, Miss Mary L. Edgar, is part of a Memory Book. The teacher in the photograph was Miss Ella Hickock, but all the pupils in the picture graduated under Miss Edgar. The Memory Book was created by a Committee of Friends of the Washington School to commemorate her retirement after 50 years. It was mailed to Miss Edgar at her new home in California after her retirement. |

The Memory Book was donated to the Wisconsin Historical Society in 1955. It is bound in brown suede, faced with brown moire fabric and has Mary L. Edgar's name stamped in gold on the cover. It contains over 500 names, letters, sketches and pictures. Miss Mary L. Edgar began teaching at Washington School, then known as First Ward School, in 1885 and retired in June of 1935, as the principal. As a child, she attended First Ward School, which was built by her Grandfather. She passed away in California at the age of 89. |
