This map shows the area described as Carvers Tract in northwestern Wisconsin Territory, in support of the land claim of Jonathan Carver (1710 - 1780). It includes 3 inset maps: Wisconsin Territory location map, Williamsburgh at Lake Peppin and the Chippewa River, and Carversville on the Menomonie River and Chippewa River. An unidentified newspaper article is mounted in the upper margin, which starts, "The Carver Tract--The United States have, by a treaty lately concluded at Washington with the Dahcotahs or Sioux, extinguished all claim of those Indians to the country east of the Mississippi River." The map is also accompanied by a photostat of the front page of the January 13, 1838, Wisconsin Democrat, which includes an article about settling the Carver Tract.
