Quarter-length studio portrait of Joseph Mathison [as written on the photograph backing, Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20, published rosters: Wisconsin Volunteers (1914) and Rosters of Wisconsin Volunteers, Volume 1 (1886); also spelt as Joseph Matheson on Descriptive Rolls, Volume 7], a captain in Company B, 15th Wisconsin Infantry, in uniform. The following information was obtained from the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20 and 7: He resided in Madison, Wisconsin. On April 17, 1861, he was enlisted as a private and mustered into service on May 17, 1861, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at age 21 for a three month term of service with Company E, 1st Wisconsin Infantry. On August 21, 1861, he was mustered out of service with Company E at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He re-enlisted and was commissioned a first lieutenant with Company B, 15th Wisconsin on November 13, 1861, in Madison, Wisconsin. On November 1, 1862, at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, he was promoted to Captain. In October 1864, he was sent to Atlanta, Georgia to retrieve the regimental baggage. On December 1, 1864, he was mustered out of service with Company B, 15th Wisconsin at Chattanooga, Tennessee. |
