Map
This hand colored map, published around 1850 in S. Augustus Mitchell's New universal atlas, shows Wisconsin counties. It shows portions of present-day Iron and Vilas counties north of the Manitowish River as part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan; Marathon and Kenosha counties are not yet depicted; and "La Pointe" is the northernmost county. The township grid, roads, and railroads are shown in surveyed areas of Wisconsin and neighboring parts of Iowa and Illinois. The map also shows the location of the Battle of Bad Axe, the locations of missions, U.S. agencies, and forts. Mineral lands are shaded in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
