Charles H. Hoyt's greatest success, the play is also credited by Bordman as moving American farce-comedy toward the modern musical. It opened at Madison Square Theatre, ran for 635 performances, and featured the song "The Bowery." By 1896 it was playing the West End and it continued to be revived here and abroad for decades. The silent film version arrived in 1926, with screenplay by Beatrice Vann and starring Anna May Wong. |
