George Wilson
Head and shoulders studio portrait of George Wilson, a major in 15th Wisconsin Infantry, in uniform. The following information was obtained from the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20 and 7: He resided in Madison, Wisconsin. On November 12, 1861, he commissioned as a second lieutenant and mustered into service on December 1, 1862, in Madison, Wisconsin at the age of 25. By regimental order #9, he was promoted to captain of Company H, 15th Wisconsin Infantry on May 14, 1862. He was wounded at the Battle of Stone River in Tennessee. On March 3, 1862, he was promoted to major and was subsequently relieved of command of the company on April 1, 1863. As a major, he was severely wounded on September 19, 1863, during the fighting at Chickamauga, Georgia. After recovering from the wounds received, he commanded the regiment until June 1864. He was mustered out of service on January 6, 1865, at Chattanooga, Tennessee. |
