Hauling Pipe on a Rutted Dirt Road

Rear view of a man driving a horse-drawn wagon filled with pipe on a muddy, rutted dirt road. A split-rail fence can be seen on both sides of the road and a telephone pole appears on the left. In the far distance are a farm house, buildings and trees. This image was entered in a 1898 competition sponsored by the League of American Wheelman to identify the nation's worst road conditions. The purpose of the competition was to gather evidence of the need for better roads. The donor, Otto Dorner of Milwaukee, was the national chair of the league's road improvement committee. |
